What is workplace health promotion (WHP)?

The aim of WHF is to help a company to act in a way that promotes health. It benefits both the employees and the company. Increased well-being in the workplace promotes the health of employees on the one hand and increases motivation and therefore the productivity and quality of work on the other.

4 steps to your BGF concept

  1. Step: Analyze the current health situation of your company. Ask yourself questions such as: How are you currently supporting your employees to stay physically and mentally healthy? Is absenteeism particularly high during the cold months?
  2. Step: Become aware of the goals you want to achieve with workplace health promotion. Goals could be, for example, to reduce absenteeism, reduce staff turnover or improve the working atmosphere.
  3. Step: Define measures on how WHP should be implemented in your company. Pay attention to the needs of the employees and the previously defined goals.
  4. Step: Be aware of what your budget is for implementing the OHF measures. Name a person responsible for the OHF.

Tip

You can also launch an employee survey. Ask specifically about the well-being and health of your workforce. A standardized WHP program is rarely accepted by employees. However, if you are aware of your employees' needs and provide an individualized program, the likelihood of success is highest. Every euro invested in employee health returns 2.7 times in the medium term*. * According to a meta-study by the Health and Work Initiative (2019) based on 100 studies

BGF measures

How to ensure health in the workplace

One of the simplest BGF measures can be to provide your employees with a free fruit basket or healthy drinks such as teas and smoothies. The BMG measures also include providing information material on health topics. Employee appraisals, especially return-to-work interviews and training measures for staff and managers are also part of health promotion in the company. Companies that place particular emphasis on the prevention of office illnesses can offer their employees health at the workplace in the form of office gymnastics and company fitness. Reduce costly absenteeism in the long term and improve performance with healthier employees.

The most frequently asked questions about workplace health promotion (WHP)

  1. What does workplace health promotion mean?
  2. Workplace health promotion means focusing on employees and their health in order to sustainably improve their health and therefore their motivation and performance.

  3. What is part of workplace health promotion?
  4. In principle, occupational health promotion encompasses all measures to protect employees in the workplace and to promote their physical and mental health.

  5. Why is workplace health promotion so important?
  6. Both health and satisfaction in everyday working life have been proven to contribute to increased performance and a reduction in sickness-related absences.

  7. What examples are there of workplace health promotion?
  8. Popular examples of BGF are: Fruit baskets, free drinks, active breaks, information materials, mental health, fitness courses and ergonomic workplace design.

  9. For which companies is workplace health promotion suitable?
  10. Companies that want to show their employees appreciation and have understood the positive effect of information, training sessions and mindfulness offers.

  11. What is the difference between company health management (BGM) and company health promotion (BGF)?
  12. Workplace health promotion is a sub-discipline of occupational health management. It includes individual measures in the areas of exercise, nutrition and mental health. The successful implementation of occupational health promotion requires the support of an external service provider or supplier who offers office gymnastics or back fitness units, for example.

  13. What does workplace health promotion cost?
  14. Fit-Up offers individual packages for the entire company starting at €199 per month. The savings resulting from the offer for employees are always greater than the investment in WHP. According to a meta-study by the Health and Work Initiative (issue 40, 2019), a company saves an average of €2.70 for every euro invested in WHP. This high return on investment (ROI) has been scientifically proven and confirmed in practice by Austrian companies - not only in large companies, but also in SMEs.

  15. Is workplace health promotion mandatory?
  16. The Employee Protection Act (ASchG) obliges every employer to "ensure the safety and health protection of employees with regard to all aspects relating to work".

  17. Who pays for workplace health promotion?
  18. There are various options for financing BGF measures. On the one hand, the employer can assume the entire costs. Targeted and impact-oriented health promotion and prevention measures by sports scientists, fitness trainers, instructors, physiotherapists and doctors with appropriate additional training are among the non-contributory social benefits. In addition to covering the costs in full, companies also have the option of paying part of the costs. The employee pays the remaining amount out of their own pocket. However, the latter is not very attractive for the employee. This works best when WHP is seen as a free benefit for employees.

  19. What are the benefits of workplace health promotion?
  20. A company's success is determined by the commitment and motivation of its employees. A healthy balance is necessary in the world of work, which is determined by competitive pressure and labor shortages.

  21. How long has workplace health promotion been around?
  22. The idea of the BGF goes back to the Ottawa Charter from 1986.

  23. What are the prerequisites for workplace health promotion?
  24. One of the most important prerequisites is the willingness of employees to actually take advantage of the WHP offers. This can be positively influenced by team competitions and regular "advertising measures" within the company.
